This project had us create a number of separate rooms
in a basement. Each has a slightly different orientation
with some common binding elements, namely the 1920s.
Descending these re-finished stairs into the mudroom
you are under the impression that the basement was finished
80 years ago but perfectly maintained. Solid black and
white VCT flooring is surrounded by six refinished solid
wood doors, one of which leads to a cedar closet with
an incense cedar door. The custom-built unit with a
small coat closet, shoes and gloves cubbies, and an
integrated bench is what really makes this space.
The laundry received a period style paneling treatment.
A six inch deep shelf runs the perimeter of the room
providing an out of the way storage and decorating area.
The storage unit with birch countertop was custom-built
in our shop, and assembled on site. The hardware matches
that of the first floor kitchen.
We had to hide pipes and wires in a couple of ceiling
soffits, but in this fun kid’s room, they add
to the sense of playfulness. The homeowners found a
fun and spirited carpet which brings most of the color
to this space. The entertainment center was custom-built
in our shop and made from plywood and beadboard to give
it an "Old World" feel.
