The
original configuration of the bathroom and adjacent
closet was confusing. Starting with a narrow doorway
tucked behind a chimney, a disfunctional set of shelves
and drawers that functioned like a linen closet, and
finishing with a long narrow closet lodged behind the
bathroom. Everything about this space was wrong.
The new design called for relocating the door to the
bathroom, taking over the closet, creating two new
closets for the bedrooms, a walk-in shower, soaking
tub, custom linen storage, and a custom double bowl
vanity. The client’s direction was to create a spa-like
environment that felt open and relaxing.
The solution required detailed attention to the space
available and how it could be used. The results are
amazing. Natural light streams through a fiberglass
shower window through a piece of Eco-resin that serves
as the shower wall. Light also comes into the room
from another window to the side of the vanity. The
wall between the tub and the shower has a small opening
that makes the tub feel private.
The floor-to-ceiling linen storage is lifted off the
ground 8" so that it feels more like furniture.
It curves around the corner providing great storage
while not invading the space. The vainty is one of
our most exciting pieces to date. The design allows
for both concealed and open storage. The shelving is
integrated into the large oval leg that serves as the
visible end of the vanity. The countertop is remnant
granite and is shaped to allow for maximum storage
while not impinging on the window or the ability to
use the space.
The tile work is a mixture of porcelain, glass, and
natural stone. The tub has a reused slate deck. The
shower has an undulating inlay of stones running up
the corner. The varying lengths of dark tile inset
on the cream field are meant to mimic the natural reeds
that are pressed in the Eco-Resin panel. The floor
is a large running bond inset with gold glass accent
which gives the floor just enough character so it doesn’t
feel bland. |
